Isabel Ayala
Isabel brings decades of service to Indigenous communities and local government to her role as Secretary for the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation. Her longstanding involvement with CBCN, fluency in the Šmuwič language, and commitment to cultural preservation uniquely qualify her to serve the Nation while honoring Chumash heritage.
Isabel’s professional journey began in 1982 with Candelaria American Indian Council, where she quickly became involved with CBCN meetings. Her early contributions led to her serving as Secretary for the Southern Council of CBCN. While at Candelaria, she developed versatile skills as an employment services specialist, cultural resources monitor, and planning specialist. Her career continued through positions with the State of California, Ventura County Sheriff's Department, Ventura County Human Services Department, and the Ventura County District Attorney's Office Child Support Department.
Throughout her career, she has maintained strong ties to tribal leadership, serving on Candelaria's board both as a member and as Chair. Her commitment to CBCN is evidenced by her service in multiple board positions including treasurer, secretary, vice-chair, and briefly as chair. For the past 14 years, she has studied the Šmuwič language and has spent over 3 years teaching it to others. Currently employed by Wishtoyo, she educates students of all ages about Chumash history and cultural practices.
Her dedication extends beyond professional roles into personal pursuits that enrich the community. She researches the language of Limuw, creates traditional crafts including ribbon skirts, studies anthropology and genealogy, and participates as a member of both the Chumash Dance Sisters and the Chumash Cultural Collective.
