Welcoming Pacific Voyagers to Chumash Lands
Chumash peoples welcomed Pacific Islanders to Malibu, and for a moment, it wasn’t Malibu—it was Humaliwo, “where the surf sounds loudly,” an ancient village of proud Chumash seafarers. Canoes met on ancestral waters, and what unfolded was not ceremony alone, but a reunion—of oceanic kin, of shared breath, of old names called back to life.

The Chumash tomol ’Elye’wun joins the Tongva ti’at Mo’omat Ahiko on ancestral waters once rich with trade and kinship.
