Annual Tomol Journey: A Partnership Across the Ocean

This annual journey follows the traditional ocean route our ancestors took to the Channel Islands—and it’s more than a voyage. It is a spiritual undertaking, a community gathering, and a profound act of cultural continuity. With the support of the National Park Service, especially Channel Islands National Park, this collaboration honors the deep maritime heritage of our Chumash people.

Every part of the journey reflects care and intention. Cultural protocols are upheld, ensuring sacred sites on the island are treated with respect. National Park Service staff work hand in hand with our community to provide logistical and safety support for the crossing, from weather checks to welcoming shores.

But just as important is the story we tell, not just to ourselves, but to the world—and it opens their eyes to a new way of being. We share details of this journey through stories told on Channel Islands National Park website, local news outlets, and on social media.

As our paddlers reach the shore, greeted by loved ones, songs, and ceremony, we are reminded: we have always been here. And we will always return. This crossing is not just a reflection of the past—it is a commitment to the future. To stewardship. To sovereignty. To making our presence visible and honored on public lands.

It is a journey home.
