Wonono Rubio

Wonono’s lifelong commitment to Chumash ceremony, activism, and community leadership makes him a strong Elder’s Representative for the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation. With decades of experience in tribal governance and spiritual practice, he brings deep cultural knowledge, grounded relationships, and a steady voice rooted in tradition.

Wonono is a Chumash elder who has served in multiple leadership roles for the Coastal Band, including board member, secretary, vice chair, and chairman. Wonono developed a strong spiritual and physical connection to land and water early in life, and he began his Chumash ceremonial life through sweat lodge ceremonies under John Sespe, which deepened his commitment to Chumash practices and activism.

He was involved in the historic occupation to protect Pt. Concepcion, a sacred Chumash site, and through this experience, connected with many Chumash elders, medicine people, and allies. His lifelong participation in sweat lodge ceremony and spiritual leadership was later recognized by tribal spiritual leaders who honored him as K’sen and Antap. He also participated in ceremonies with the Bear Society at Muhu Tasin, where he was initiated as a Bear Dancer.

Wonono continues to emphasize the enduring relationship between land, spirit, and community, holding that while culture evolves, this sacred connection remains at the heart of Chumash identity and existence.
