In Memory of Frank L. Gutierrez (Tomol'oc) 1960 - 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Frank L. Gutierrez, known to many as Nino, Brother, Tio, Cousin, and lifelong friend. Frank walked on after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in Chumash tradition and community.
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Frank was a proud member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation. Throughout his life, he carried his heritage with deep respect and unwavering devotion, serving as a bridge between generations and a keeper of our traditions.
Frank held the distinction of being the youngest member of the Brotherhood-of-the-Tomol when he participated in the historic tomol circumnavigation of the Northern Channel Islands in 1976—a moment of profound cultural significance that resonated throughout our community. His Chumash name, Tomol'oc, meaning "Tall Strong Tree," captured his essence perfectly. He stood tall not only in stature but in spirit, always ready to support his family, culture, and community with strength and grace.
Those who knew Frank remember his deep love for Santa Barbara's Fiesta, where he proudly represented our Chumash heritage in the parades. His joyful proclamations of “Viva!” echoed with pride, celebration, and connection to our ancestral roots. Frank's presence brought light and authenticity to every gathering.
Beyond his cultural contributions, Frank possessed remarkable gifts. He was known as the best baker in the family, and his love for cooking brought people together around the table. He also held within him a vast knowledge of family connections, serving as a living genealogy and ensuring that the threads binding our community remained strong and visible.
Frank was preceded in death by his father, Frank Gutierrez Sr.; mother, Virginia Sanchez; and brother, John Gutierrez. He is survived by his life partner of over 30 years, Chris Mendoza; sisters Tina Grubbs-Gutierrez (Lloyd Grubbs) and Letty Sanchez; brothers Louis Gutierrez (Efren) and George Gutierrez (Christy); along with many nieces and nephews and countless cousins who will carry his memory forward.
